Recently this has been a heated discussion in the 8th grade classrooms, during math, language arts and even on the New York Trip. The reason why we’re debating so much on this topic is because we all found out that one student pronounces it “bag-l,” but this isn’t a new thing. Throughout this year we have talked so many times about how we pronounce things. usually it’s me that’s getting made fun for the way I pronounce “singing” like “seen-eeng” or pronouncing “pink” like “peenk”
So during one of our most recent language arts classes when Ms. Brown got a little fed up with us, so she looked up the correct pronunciation for the word bagel. The exact article we read is titled “It’s Definitely Not Pronounced ‘BAG-el’ By Olivia Franceschini” The main part we paid attention to was as follows “If anything, this pronunciation battle should boil down to ‘bye-gel’ and ‘bay-gull.’ According to Smithsonian Magazine, bagels were first created in Eastern Europe, and mentions of ring-shaped bread date back to as early as 1394. The word bagel itself comes from the Yiddish word ‘beigel’ (pronounced like “bye-gel”), which was later anglicized to ‘bagel’ When immigrants introduced the food to the United States during the 20th century.” We were all pretty shocked that it used to be pronounced “bye-gul” So in all technicalities you should be pronouncing bagel as “bye-gul.”
