ASA middle school decided to make some electives. They made Debate a new elective. It is a very mysteric class, there are always hidden messages and tricks. The other day we had to bring a small and unique item to class, then we had to set it down on a table and grab a random item that wasn’t your own item. We then had 15 minutes to advertise that item. We have to learn the basics of debate, We have to learn how to work in teams.
In Debate Class, students learn how aspects of Body Language can be used to improve public speaking skills and debating. Subjects include: Kinesics, Proxemics, Haptics, Oculesics, Chronemics, Physical Appearance, and Artifacts.
Debate is not about arguing and yelling at others to win. It is not about who can be the loudest. Debate is about using facts, logic, and skills to prove that your position is the best one. It is a formal discussion where two opposing positions are presented to an audience to convince others that you are correct. Debate class will teach you how to speak and present yourself better in the classroom to get better grades when giving oral reports or speeches.
There are 3-4 formal debates scheduled during the trimester. Students will receive a topic, draw for teams, research their topic, and then as a team debate the members of the opposing team. Teams consist of 4 members who all have roles to play in the debate. Every student will also learn how to judge a formal debate.
Pro means you are for it, and agree.
Opposing means you are not for it, and disagree.
