Let’s start with some history – Figgy Pudding is a food that originated in the 14th century in England. No single person made it, it changed over time to the dessert we have now. It’s a rich dessert served during christmas time or close to the new year, made of dried fruits like raisins, currants, and figs. Sometimes made with meat like beef or even mutton (which is lamb).
Figgy Pudding originally came from “Medieval Britain,” the time period when castles were starting to be made. English was starting to replace French and it was spoken more, towns were growing and more people came to Britain. Figgy Pudding was originally made to preserve ingredients for winter. It was also made for a warm meal that will fill you up during Christmas time.
An interesting fact about Figgy Pudding is that it was originally made with 13 ingredients to represent Jesus and his disciples.
It kind of looks like a cross between a fruit cake and strawberry shortcake. It’s sweet but not overly sweet. To be honest, I’ve never tried it but I’d like to try it to see why so many people like it and why it’s mentioned in the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” If anyone has tried Figgy Pudding, I’d love to hear about it.
