Mothers day is a day to honor and celebrate all of the mothers out there. Just think about it, you wouldn’t be here without your mom. She went through all of the pain and suffering to bring you to life.
Mothers day was officially established as a holiday in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson; it is celebrated on the Second Sunday in May. Popular traditions include giving gifts, sending cards, and celebrating with family meals, often accompanied by the distribution of carnations, which were chosen by Anna Jarvis as the emblem of the holiday. After her mother’s death in 1905, Anna Jarvis began campaigning to create a national holiday to recognize mothers. She organized the first Mother’s Day celebration in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia.
Social activist Julia Ward Howe introduced the idea of Mother’s Day in the US, following the Civil War, as a way to protest war. While the date varies, Mother’s Day is celebrated in over 40 countries worldwide, Ancient Greeks and Romans had festivals honoring mothers, some of which involved religious ceremonies.
