Teagan Rooney is an 8th grader at Art and Science Academy Middle School. Teagan has been at ASA, and in band, for almost 3 years. She was interviewed for the ASA Galaxy News about her time and experiences in band.
What instrument do you play?
“Clarinet.”
How long have you been in a band?
“Almost 2 ½ years.”
What was your favorite piece of music to play?
“Due North.”
How do you enjoy band class?
“I enjoy band class by talking to my friends about the music and putting so much passion and joy into playing.”
What is your favorite part of playing your instrument?
“The range of the clarinet is incredibly long and high.”
Teagan has been nominated for the University of Minnesota Duluth Honor Band twice, and she was asked what her experience was.
“It’s long and challenging, you wake up super early in the morning, and you play your instrument for 7 hours straight and perform a concert, you learn multiple pieces in a day, and you get them mastered in a day and you perform a concert. It was long and honestly, I was kind of sore afterwards, like my head was sore. It’s challenging.”
Is there anything else you would like to say to people that would like to be in a band in the future or would like to be in a band in future years?
“Good job.”
Is there any advice you would like to give them?
“Make sure that you’re prepared, and know what you’re signing up for, because you have chances for scholarships if you join a band and get the right opportunities. Just try to enjoy it, and pick whatever instrument that you think suits you best, and if you don’t think that instrument suits you, try not to just quit the band, maybe try a different instrument, and if that instrument still doesn’t suit you, maybe band isn’t your thing.”
